Ok, that would explain why some sort of state-registered union could be required; though here, in Russia, you don't get any benefits like the ones you mentioned, so that is probably why many take the gay marriage as just another form of exhibitionism.
My only personal concern remains that when families get any monetary benefits, this is supposed to support those who bring up the kids, and I wouldn't like my taxes to be spent on barren couples.
Finally I am pretty sure that eventually gays will be accepted in Russia just like in Europe now, will take a couple of generations probably. Just history moving along its tracks.
