Passive Gaydar is what most people think of when they think of Gaydar: Reading people to determine whether or not they are gay. This is like passive sonar.
Active Gaydar works a little like active sonar, where you deliberately perform a certain homoerotic action and watch the reaction of who you wish to distinguish. For example, putting one's arm around the target (if the target knows you) while sitting down is one instance of Active Gaydar. If I were to do it to a guy, and he shows signs of discomfort, he's straight. If he shows signs of embarassment, he's probably gay or bi. If he shows signs of infatuation, he's most definitely gay. If no reaction is garnered, nothing can be said.
