Fan Art: It was all Sweden's fault

hooray for brain washing little children *brick* ouch ok sorry for that ^^;

any way based on a satw comic by Humon this one [link]

any way in that comic, America couldn't see Denmark, and thought Norway looked like Sweden, etc.

and I was thinking, hmm "I can't help but think this is some what Sweden's fault, why is it that America could see Sweden and not the others"

so I did some research turns out that of all the Scandinavia countries Sweden been with us the longest, even had a colony called New Sweden, which was part of the States Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

and Sweden was the first country not involved in the American Revolution to recognize are Independence and Benjamin Franklin was the ambassador to Sweden, (he never went there because he was old)

any way history out of the way, I do think Sweden might have used this to his advantage to make America like him more then Denmark and Norway (might have backed fire)

Did a Norwegian make this? Some of them blame the Swedes for everything, including stubbing their toe on something (my bf actually did this once), but I hear the Swedes do the same thing for the Norwegians.

@AmericanButterfly Well, Bush sometimes forgot that...
Thing is a country might official be independent but it's generally in someones sphere of interest.
And if that someone is powerful enough it's often unwise to refuse their will...
Still we're a country that's annoying both the US, the EU and China at the same time, and we're still here!
The norwegian-american relations have improved a lot lately though (Bush didn't like us and didn't really want to talk to our prime-minister).
China is still annoyed with us because of the last peace price and are in effect ignoring us with the exception of our press in their country that's followed by their secret services at all times (and harassed by them).
Our companies can't get any deals done there anymore (unless the biggest share of the company is owned by another country) and our diplomats are just sitting there in their embassies without being allowed to talk to anyone really...
The only good thing is that they haven't actually thrown the diplomats out of the country, so if they do change their mind at some point then the diplomats will still be there ready to resume their work.

As for EU.
We're refusing to join them, and voted against joining the eurozone in two different referendums.
And a recent poll listed the no-side as a record high 70%

Regarding the oil-production part...
Well, in the beginning we allowed companies from several nations to drill here, but demanded that they'd use some of our workforce and allowed us to own a share in the company that works here.
The idea is that in that way we'd learn how they'd do it.
And we did, eventually our own state oil-company Statoil learned enough to do it's own drilling, and they're the ones that own the biggest areas of our shores.
But we're still allowing others to drill there, in fact a partly swedish and partly norwegian oil-company recently found a fairly big field of our shores.
So although the taxes (that's fairly high) and part of the owners share of money goes to norway, we don't take all the money, just the lion's share ;-)

Here Sweden, you can have the left-overs!
(We also get a bit of the same effect when it comes to grocery stores, we have a way higher VAT then Sweden as well as a more expensive currency, in the later case because of the oil, so norwegians cross the border in their thousands to buy cheap products in Sweden)

@Domaldel long comment is long, thank you for the history lesson between our two countries :)

and it was Mexico that New Mexico got it's Independence from.

(I knew Norway was an oil producing country but I didn't know you let America drill there...)

of course your independence from the US =p

Oh...
I might need to go back here and edit away more or less all of that post...
Man, writing stuff at night is a bad idea...
You tend to write more while saying less :-/
If you get my meaning...
In essence, that wall of text seem to be a bit foolish seen with hindsight...
But I need a little sleep before I start tackling that monster... ><

@AmericanButterfly Yeah I'm talking about immigration thing.
At the time when New Sweden where still there under Swedish rule we (Norway) where under Danish rule.
In fact the kingdom of Norway-Denmark and the kingdom of Sweden (with Finland, sometimes called Sweden-Finnland) where arch enemies at the time fighting multiple wars. Heck that period contributed significantly to making the Swedish-Danish wars more plentiful then even the French-British ones.
There's litterer no other countries that have had that meany wars with the same country as those two have had.
But back to immigration.
There where a few norwegian people involved in the Danish colonies at the time. And there where several Norwegians involved in the Dutch one (New Amsterdam).
Also, we've always had a lot of sailors and sometimes they went ashore some place and didn't return, that includes the states.
But Norwegians didn't start coming in any real numbers to the states till ca 1825 and onward.
Anyway, point is that immigrants from Norway have a lot of history in the states and we've always had fairly good relations with the states as a country (after we gained independence) particularly due to our merchant fleets contributions to the war effort during WW2 and the american and British contribution to not only freeing us from Hitlers rule, but later making an agreement with Staling where he pulled out of North Norway. And on top of that we really benefited from the Marshall aid.
And add to that us being a part of NATO (with radar stations close to the USSR during the cold war)
Also we where the only NATO country with a fairly good diplomatic relationship with USSR at the time (we're the only country with a border to Russia that they've never been at war with and we don't pull back our diplomats just because we dislike a countries behavior like some other states do)
Oh, and finally, we ended up as a oil country (with several US companies among the first ones to drill on our shores)

All of those should help making the relationships fairly good.
Oh, and another thing, we're not a part of EU so we've often been a part of the US diplomatic foothold in Europe.

All I'm saying is that the two countries got a bit of shared history so you'd think they'd be able to see each-other fairly well ;-)

On the other hand, our sailors did play a part in the slave trade in the old days...
Also, we've long had an annoying habit of thinking that we're independent not just from the EU but from the US as well :-P

Then again, there's no reason for me to expect anyone outside of Europe to know all these things about Norway (with the exception of norwegian-americans)
And it's not like I know all that much about american history.
I mean, sure I knew about the Duch and Swedish colony (mostly because of the nordic people involved on both sides of the fight between those two colonies)
But other then that I only remember some broad stuff like Britons dominating in the east, the French holding more central parts of Canada and areas further south along the Mississippi, Florida and Calefornia being Spanish (and Texas perhaps?)
And I don't remember if New Mexico was Spanish or if Mexico had achieved independence by the time you got that area or not...
Plenty of wars against Indians, Ohio comes to mind.
Erh, Utah is Mormon country, aye?
I also seem to remember a few minor wars between some states (no battle related fatalities though I think) as well as the civil war (that sure did have fatalities)
Oh, and if you go back to the time under British rule there where some really interesting wars between Britons, Americans and Indians allied with you guys on the one hand and the French with the Indians allied with them on the other hand...
Erh...
Ok, I'm a bit more then averagely interested in history without really being all that good at it...
As you've perhaps noticed by now... *blushes slightly*

Anyway...
Regarding Norway being mad at Sweden...
Donno.
But the way I see it you guys just remember Sweden because they're the standard social-democratic country who have had an extremely long period of time under social-democratic rule politically (even compared to us here in Norway)
Anyway, the political left in most countries tend to look towards Sweden as a role-model in most things, that include us here in Norway too.
And with some much one-sided attention to a single nation in a region the others kind of end up in their shadow...
Another thing is that they've generally been doing good in just about everything for ages, having the third highest production of patents pr citizen in the world I believe it was and on the cultural front they're one of the countries in Europe that have won the eurovision song contest the most (Ireland still leads over Sweden but not by much)
And so on and so forth...
And they're the country with the biggest population in the nordic region too ;-)

Um...

TL;DR Norway got plenty of reasons for America to see the difference between him and Sweden, but Sweden is a showoff leaving Norway in his shadow most of the time... ;-)

2:23pm Fri 11th Nov #877663

@Domaldel are you talking about the immigration thing, I was talking about, when there was a colony in America called "New Sweden" (I don't think there was colony called "New Norway")

we weren't just part of the British Empire, there was The Netherlands and Sweden Empires we were part of though that didn't last long (parts of Norway was part of the Sweden Empire back then too right? (I know Finland was)

you know it's funny you said that cause at first I was thinking of having Norway get all angry at Sweden for "brainwashing the child" but decide not to

Might as well add a last link...

Have fun reading all of that ^^

7:06pm Tue 8th Nov #871955

Erh, just so you know...
After Ireland it's Norway that have contributed the most to the American population with settlers compared to population (at the time when they left)
So we've been with you for a long, long while too ;-)
For instance, all the tow boats in New York used to be crewed by norwegians in the old days (from what I've heard)
But you're right about Denmark-Norway never having a colony on the mainland.
[link]
Then again, the vikings did land there:

And while we're at it, sweden: [link]

I knew of Denmark before SATW. But pretty much by seeing a reference to it from South Park once. But they made them look Dutch.

One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, John Morton, was descended from Finnish settlers. [link]

There's also the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia, on the site of the old Swedish colony. [link]
