despite Denmark saying no he was very much in needed of the money, so I guess he was trying to stall America for a little more ^^ plus he was a little lonely and needed someone to talk to, this was when Denmark was really down in the dumps.

Another thing is, that Danish politicians probably thought that America wouldn't risk the islands falling into German hands (because of the small Danish garrison that could easily be overrun), and so sold them to prevent America from simply taking them.
