Fan Art: The Southwest

Southwest States:
Left to right:
Arizona (Arizona has A large technological industry but is also gun crazy so I made him a geek with a gun.)
New Mexico (A nature lover.)
Texas (Redneck with a pedo mustache.)
Oklahoma (Uh, how do I say this? Special.)
Colorado (A yuppie, because Coloradans are typically stereotyped as being upper middle class and rather conservative.)
Nevada. (Well, it's the only state where prostitution is legal, isn't it?)

@danjuno:

Aahhhhhh....you lived in Scottsdale! That explains everything. You're right about Scottsdale.....tons of yuppies and businesses there. Lol

Heck, all the different sections of "Phoenix" have hilarious stereotypes, like Sun City being really really really old (since that is where all of the retirement homes and apartments are). :D

@WorldTraveler No problem. I grew up at the foot of the Appalachians, so I've had to put with hillbilly jokes endlessly, so I guess I let my anger out when I was drawing Oklahoma. When I moved from the DC area, I wound up in Mesa, and later moved to Scottsdale. (Believe me when I say there are a TON of yuppies over here!) My mom works at a government building in Phoenix proper, and she has no idea how her coworkers from Glenndale/Peoria/Goodyear can commute when they have to drive towards the sun to and from work. Texas was kinda based on this: [link]

@danjuno:

If you're mad about this, I'm sorry. Truly. I didn't mean to offend at all.

@danjuno:

I understand, but the stereotypes on this website are funny and true enough to be neutral and likeable for all parties.

Plus, I wanted to know you knew these places and joked about them instead of being, say, a New Englander who thinks everyone in the West is an imbred, drunk, uneducated racist. (And trust me, there are a lot of them who think that).

Where in Phoenix? I'm from Glendale originally and I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. (I've lived the last 13 years of my life in Portugal, Germany, and the Philippines).

Texas, like most states, has its share of hillbillies, but I don't think people give it any good credit. Just because you are Texan doesn't mean you're an idiot.

Ironically, my parents met and married in Oklahoma, but my mother was from New York, so even though Okies aren't considered "Southern", they didn't hold back calling her "Yank." Lol. I don't really understand how Oklahoma is imbred though. :P Like I said, rich culture.

Don't let Colorado's income fool you. It's just as Western as any other western state.

So yeah, I'm not offended. Just pointing out that stereotypes don't HAVE to be brutal. One of the reasons I love SATW is because it finds that great balance of stereotype and truth and remains humorous no matter how true or untrue it is.

If you can find stereotypes that aren't incredibly offensive, you're gold. Not hating on your stuff.....just giving advice. (that sounded less egotistical in my head. Lol)

@WorldTraveler Stereotypes (which this site is based around) are not meant to be positive. They are supposed to feed on the negative sides of people.
I live in the Phoenix Area, and a lot of the white people here in Phoenix are the spitting image of "yuppies with guns." But, yes a lot of them have pick-ups trucks.
Texas is just your average stereotypical hillbilly. Remember, we're talking about stereotypes here. Besides, I did NOT say he is a pedo, he just has a "pedo" mustache. It's just a joke. [link]
As for Oklahoma, I come from Appalachian Country, so don't think I haven't already had to put of with Hillbilly jokes. If hillbillies can't make jokes about other hillbillies, who can? I admit it was a bit cheap, but, again, as an American, I don't care for the way America is portrayed as an ignorant hillbilly, but I don't make a huge stink about it.
Colorado has the highest income of the states I drew, so I thought making him a stereotypical resident of middle-class suburbia would be a good idea. [link]
Your idea of NM being an AZ clone seems pretty good though.
No, I have never been to New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, or Texas. However, stereotypes are not meant to be positive nor are they made by people who know what people from the stereotyped group are actually like. It's just MS paint drawings. The Oklahoma thing is just a hillbilly joke. I didn't want to offend anybody, but I'm sorry if I did.

@danjuno:

Ummmmmm......have you even been to these states? Ok, here are some suggestions.

Arizona could be one of two things; dark skinned with blonde hair because of the huge amount of Mexicans in a previously white area OR (my preference) rugged look with jeans and a pickup. Arizona is no place for sissies and EVERYONE in Arizona has a pickup truck.

New Mexico is fairly accurate, although Utah, Colorado, and Arizona have much more beautiful and diverse nature. To be honest, he's kind of a clone of Arizona in looks, but not ruggedness.

Texas is NOT a redneck or a pedo, despite the constant stereotypes. Texas is a self-made businessman who worked with his hands to get where he is. I'd say he is a tall tough guy with a tie.

Oklahoma is just insulting. How on earth did you get inbred hillbilly? Oklahoma has incredibly rich history and hold the largest Native American population in the US. I think THIS Oklahoma hit it on the head.

[link]

Colorado is a mountain man. Plain and simple. He loves the winter and loves extreme sports. Very handsome, like his state.

And Nevada? Well, Vegas is the only real thing going for it so any LV steroeotype fits.

So yeah, there's my 2 cents, from a guy from the SouthWest.

@TianaSidhe Sorry. I didn't have any good ideas for Oklahoma when I was making this, so I just went with the "inbred hillbilly" stereotype.

>:I I do *not* appreciate your view on Oklahoma!
