@Karen Hmm, the definition of a "Museum" is surprisingly broad. Including historical societies, who may just give talks or tours and not have a permanent collection and things like arboretums, nature centres, zoos and wildlife conservation which aren't really classified as museums, as ICOM (the international Council of Museums) state...

"A museum is a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment."

If you take that into account. Then that 35,000 number dwindles to a mere 16,385.
