It wasnt a wolf. Dieffenbaker was a malamute. :| But yes, I loved that show and all the weird 'detective stuff' he did. I think my favorite episode was where Dief followed a car, and left a trail of pee marks for Mountie to ... follow by sniffing. And accidentally at some point they ended up following a Rotweiler for a number of blocks.
