I might not be remembering correctly, but I believe I saw a snippet of news footage saying some small, buoyant bits of wreckage was spotted floating in the open ocean... which seems like enough confirmation that the plane went down over open water, shattered from the impact, and promptly sank (as had already been strongly suspected). Recovery of anything at all is virtually impossible.
