@Yeehaw0 No island, no mountain that I know of. It was a farm a long time ago and the area was grazed until it was barren. The soil washed away leaving the sand beneath it. Someone bought it and decided to make it a tourist attraction calling it a desert. It's just a glacial sand deposit, no desert about it.

Oh neat, never heard of that one. Maine has two "deserts" then.
Looks like it was named by the French for it's barren mountains instead of lack of precipitation and the locals pronounce it more like dessert due to the french origin of the name sounding more like dessert than desert.
