Eerm, not to diss anyone, but check out the alphabet from the Sinhala language (one of Sri Lanka's main languages).

Personally I don't know of any other language which has more letters to their alphabet.
16 consonants, 24 vowels, 8 pre-nasalized consonants, plus 18 additional letters in the misra secondary alphabet, for a grand total of 66 letters.
Oh, and a ton of diphthongs.

Yes, they do make up words by writing left to right and stringing individual letters together.
Darn, that language must be a bitch to learn.
Maybe that's why the Sri Lankans I met always laughed when I said that German is a hard language to learn.
