I know how to use the metric system, and can convert easily, as math is second nature, but I hate it. Metric is evil. It's the suburbia of measurement systems. Yes, the cookie-cutter standardization makes some things easier. They both have a time and place, only a masochist would do physics in the English system, and the suburbia template makes decent housing affordable for some people that it wouldn't be, otherwise. But either, if they become ubiquitous, strip us of our humanity with their soul-sucking banality. Sure, suburbs that are all designed exactly the same way is easier, but what is lost, while perhaps not quantifiable, is too high a price to pay. Same with measuring systems, there is beauty and culture in 12 inches to the foot, and names that aren't the same for every unit, just as street names with some creativity, not just named after the trees that were bulldozed to make room for the houses, offers something. The same is true of languages. It might be easier if everyone spoke English, but the loss of culture from the languages already lost, is a loss to humanity.
