EU is barely a ill arranged confederation, with tonnes of overlapping projects, and military capacities, with very small mobility of manpower, and small capital investement between nation states, among other problems.

Still today many USA vehicles, and weapons, etc are developed by europeans, not to wonder that about 1/2 of the american scientist community is foreign, and 1/3 of all their Nobel prizes were in fact won by europeans.
If Europe was a Federation, USA would be left miles away, in nearly every aspect, in military matters, Europe would not pull a big gun, it would pull something like a repeating missile launcher, XD
