For example, _shirt_ is from Old English, but _skirt_ is from Old Norse. Even _skull_ is from Old Norse, probably from Old Norse _skalli_ “bald head, skull.” In English, we say _SKOAL!_, pronounced like _SKÅL!_ It comes from Danish _skaal_, perhaps introduced into English through the visit of James VI to Denmark in 1589.
