Fanatic converts and missionaries are just plain obnoxious - I’ve come across the smug, ignorant, the patronising, the pushy, the bigots, you name it. Like masturbation, religion is something that should be done in the privacy of your own home. Certainly not shoved down your throat like many missionaries and street corner preachers do. Father used to invite visiting Jehovah’s Witness and Mormon missionaries inside, then troll them. It was funny watching them squirm under his incisive interrogations.
I decided to deal differently with those oxygen thieves. When one of them knocks on my door and starts their spiel I brusquely chop it off and close the door on them. I don’t feel obligated to be polite to people trying to collect brownie points in heaven. Missionaries are the religious version of pyramid selling - you get more points by collecting new converts. And some converts and fanatics just wield their religion like a weapon.
The best religious people I have known simply lived their values without fuss and without a look-at-how-godly-I-am attitude, no bigotry, no double standards, and instead being good role models by quiet example, and walking their talk with grace.
