I feel inclined to point out a few things but I'm nervous about my long comments seeming soap box-ish. Many of the stereotypes of 'the south' crop up from environmental factors. For one, the south is famous for it's isolationist, mountaineers: men of the mountains, and family feuds (or clans) such as the Hatfields and McCoys. As such strong family bonds were upheld far more then in your more cosmopolitan Northern states and from sheer isolation, small towns only had the majority of families who came in to join to 'get with'. As such inbreeding wasn't as prevalent as most think, but more prevalent because distant cousins were still acceptable choices for mates. However the stereotype still remains.

Also there is a strong stereotype for ignorant southerners with bad teeth. This mainly stems again from the isolation of many communities and the lack of 'proper' education. The southern political sphere is more republican and is still seen as such today, and back then that translated into traditional biblical values and teachings instead of the more 'progressive' northern intellectual ideals.

This is not to say Christianity has kept the south willfully ignorant nor that it's political leaders have starved the south of proper education due to following tradition but for some reason there is still a big gap between northern social care and southern social care and labor laws. The bad teeth stereotype stems from the fact there is just not much dental care available to the southern states, something well explored in various documentaries especially in Kentucky.

All in all however, the ignorant, inbred, stereotypes still persist. But then again, I suppose if Wales and NZ sheep can marry each other, the stereotype of kissing cousins isn't so bad.

I've been waiting for the Southern American Stereotype! I am from Kentucky, and all though I grew up in a very liberal city... there are some places where "Cousin America" exists! I just tend to stay away from them haha =D
