Hmm... I personally would say that since a vampire's characteristic was a creature that drinks blood and has pale skin which burns in the sunlight, Meyer created a totally different species when she altered a vampire's skin to sparkle instead. But I think you have a point there. Since vampires are mythological, we would never know what a vampire would look like. Yet this depiction of a vampire has roused many angry vampire fans.
Yes, it has indeed become popular and notorious at the same time, so I guess in Meyer's novels, vampires sparkle no matter what.
