I say "supposed to know" but perhaps I mean "allowed to know". The game could bog down if someone insisted on getting an updated count each round, but I've not known anyone to do that so far (and I've been testing with total strangers at public game events) and I don't think you'd get a significant advantage out of doing it so it seems unlikely that someone would.
