Real life people use black, the debate about african-american only exists in a select few college professor minds, and that of white people who want to not be racist but have never really interacted with black people.
There is actually nothing even remotely controversial about "black".

But what do you mean no "Mexican-American"? Someone with Mexican heritage is Mexican-American. The hyphen isn't a negative thing used to alienate people from being American, or make them less American. It's a thing used by people who are proud of their heritage.
And I think its enormously important actually, that we embrace that fact that "American" is being a mixture of things from elsewhere (unless you're native). At least in my part of the US people tend to be very quick to reference where their ancestors (or parents/grandpartents) came from. This includes white people as much as it does people from Asia and elsewhere.
