@sagas I agree, people close to the northern states seem to be quite caught up in their genetic heritage. That's not a bad thing, everyone needs to know who they are and from where they came. However, if you are born here or become a citizen, then you are known as American. When my ex became a citizen (he was a citizen of India), he wanted to be called American. He said, "I am now an American and so I should be called American. If you want to know my race, I'll tell you but call me American."
