@Zegh Norway had three kings who worked on the transition to Christianity. The first one, Haakon the Good, gave up because he didn't want to be very brutal, but Olav Tryggvason and Olav Haraldsson (the Holy) were more violent. I don't know much about the transitions in the rest of Europe, but niether of the Olavs were "peaceful" or "gentle". And sure, in some ways you may see the wars as political, but that's just because transition to Christianity were seen as a good way to unite the country.
