@amypisces The US, Canada, Australia all use "soccer", New Zealand used to, and South Africa uses the term too. It's due to British influence, not American, though ironically Britain apparently decided the word was too American and decided they'd rather sound more French.
The US, Canada, and Australia all have their own national versions of football that organically evolved from rugby, so referring to soccer as football just to conform would be too confusing.
