Because American TV is about scaring people for ratings, to make sure they stay tuned for all the commercials, not about informing the public. (And the rest of us are not much better, if we're being honest).
The Mayan people have descendants in South America even now. Some journalists actually went to ask their opinion (what a shock!) and were told "What? No, the world doesn't END! The calendar just starts over, like yours does every December. How'd you get a weird idea like the world ending out of that? American's are crazy!"
