as far as I know, in Soviet Union and Russia forestry service tried to maintain clearing lines 12-18 feet wide every couple of miles in managed forests or near roads, power lines, military bases and such. Counter-fire clearing lines over 30 feet wide and, possibly augmented by so-called "mineralized furrow" could be also used to separate areas of particular risks or to safely limit controlled burns. Do you know if something like that has been done in US at all?
