I'm from America, but this practice and many others like it doesn't freak me out like it does some of my countrymen. Partially because I've known about this sort of thing for a long time, but also because I'm capable of using logic and critical thinking. People have lived in Europe for thousands of years, and have had stationary communities for much longer than here in North America. If they didn't renew graves, they'd run out of places to bury dead folks or end up taking over space that living people need.
Though finding out that the path I was walking on was paved with old gravestones was more than a little disconcerting.
