1. Uh... well... If the room you're IN is on fire, AND the front door doorknob out is too hot to be touched, I think it's reasonable to assume that's because the area around said front door is currently on fire, and you should probably look for another exit rather than walk through it.
Seems like that much would be obvious before you get to touch the knob in the first place though. O_o
2. Well... as I explained, being able to test if a doorknob is hot or not is an important safety issue during a building fire. Heat-resistant knobs could both get people killed and spread the fire faster.
