Well I think I've got a terminology issue here. In french the word 'culte' has only one sense and it is the ritual behaviour that one may use to worship their god (well it can be used figuratively to ascertain a certain's person inclination to be worshiped) according to their own faith. But in english it also has a meaning that would be closer to "sect" (which we use in french to qualify that kind of unorthodox faith), and I'm not quite sure what the differences between a sect and a cult are.
