Here in Germany it's also expected that you take your shoes off at the door. The problem is that apartments always have these terrible floor plans in which the front door opens into a long hallway that is always too narrow for even a small bench or chair, so everyone awkwardly fumbles around standing on one foot trying to remove their shoes. I really hate it.
