The first home video game console was the Magnavox Odyssey, released in 1972, and cost US$100 (about $500 today). It used discrete circuits, and only ran ball-and-paddle games (ping-pong, tennis, etc). Atari developed Pong shortly afterwards, and Magnavox sued, but the matter was settled out of court.
The Odyssey sold well at first, but sales started dropping after salesmen started telling customers that it could only be hooked up to a Magnavox TV set, which was not true.
