@DutchToSwede The account of men and women wearing kohl around their eyes came from Ibrahim al-Tartushi - I have read a recent English translation of the whole of ibn Fadlan's story of his voyage to the Bulgars, and I do not recall any mention of make-up in his account of the Rus.
