@BritishRabbit It's well documented. The US initially became involved in Vietnam because France demanded US aid in maintaining control of their colony, while threatening to get aid from the Soviets if the US didn't help.
This didn't last very long, as France pulled out of Vietnam shortly thereafter anyway, but by that time Lyndon Johnson was emotionally invested in Vietnam and ordered more troops in despite the assessment of army observers who'd been assigned to gather intel that the US would never win the war.
