@Callid Allow me to sum up typical suburban US attitudes regarding cycling:

Motorist:
How DARE you ride on MY road! Ride your bike on the sidewalk with the other toys!

Pedestrian:
How DARE you ride on MY sidewalk! Ride your bike on the highway with the other vehicles!

Cyclist:
Rules? WHAT rules? Wheeeeee!

(And I say this as a motorist, a cyclist, AND a pedestrian. Needless to say, I try not to be "typical".)
