The Doomsday Seed Vault on Svalbard has over 21,500 cannabis seeds in it. That means that there are more seeds in there for weed than there are for aspargus, blueberry and raspberry, for example.
The main reason for so many cannabis seeds is because there are so, so, SO many varieties of hemp and marijuana. Hemp's DNA is ridiculously easy to manipulate, and new strains can be bred very quickly. There are over 400 documented species of hemp, and that's not counting all the subspecies and varietals. It's also a very useful plant: fiber products, biodegradable plastic, building materials, CBD (non-psychotropic pain medication). It's a highly nutritious source of vegetable protein, fiber, fatty acids, iron, and other vitamins and minerals. Plus it's a nitrogen fixer for soil, so it will grow on and improve the quality of poor soil. So, yeah, they've earned their spots in the vault.
AFAIK those seeds are mostly low THC varieties, and as such the primary use is make hempfiber. Hemp fibers remain one of the most durable and useful renewable resources there are for ropes and clothing.
@Grubadubdub That's not a valid argument. If you tried to smoke industrial hemp it would be like trying to get drunk on dealcoholized beer, except it would be even harder. If someone has drunk...say 10 bottles of dealcoholized beer they would at least test positive for an alcohol test, there would be a detectable amount of alcohol in his or her blood. The same isn't true for industrial hemp, the amount of THC absorbed wouldn't even be noticed.
To make it even more difficult to get a "high" on industrial hemp it contains cannabidiol, which is a THC antagonist and reduces the THCs psychoactive effect.
"Building the doomsday seed vault in svalbard", hmm... I always believe that komodo island is the safest island in the world, if the myth is true that the komodo dragon is the last living dinosaurs in the world, so... they already survive from meteor shower(massive asteroid), ice age, a lot of earthquake, tsunami, volcanic eruption, kanibalism (they eat their own eggs and their own species), wars, colonialism, indonesia politician, etc.. and still exist until now without any technology.. Maybe i should move to komodo village.. komodo dragon still alive not just creepy fossil
@ShoggothOnTheRoof Calling it bullshit. It's 130 meter over sea level, or well over 400 foot, even the most pessimistic sea level models don't predict a 130 meter rise!
@ShoggothOnTheRoof The only area that "flooded" was the entrance, and it was basically a puddle forming because the floor was slightly tilted the wrong way.
The main storage area was never compromised, and changed have been made to account for further water.
Well, Probably so they don't feel wen they slowly die in the way humanity somehow ends long into the future. (Maybe not the best to hear from a 12 year old but, well..... umm... My mental age is 17 so it's not that bad that I say it! heh)
@Rogers
There has ben an episodes where danes, amaricans, fins, Chinese, canadians and egyptian people were trying to steal or break into the doomsday seed vault. No one succeeded and all of them had the excuse that they just wanted to see if it was possible (one of them said it was one of his friends challenging them) all of them got fined and thrown in prison. So you have to keep it less known.
@Rogers
As you can see it didn’t stop them, because (as fare as i know) it has always been there but the episodes still happened.
Maybe the north pole may work better since she has to stay frozen so we don’t get her (there is no reason to if denmark can’t get it) she can probably protect it better than svalbard
