Oddly, my (U.S.) elementary school taught German, which I studied for twelve years. A lot of Americans--the ones who bother to study another language, anyway--study German because of its close-ish relationship to English. It really isn't a close relationship at all, but closer than most, which makes it pretty easy to learn. ^^;
