His companions get nicer further north. In Germany he often has no companion, but is said to put bad children in his sack and take them with him. In the Netherlands. He just has a little black boy called "Zwarte Piet" ("Black Pete") that hands out the sweets.
And to think, US children only have to fear getting a lump of coal when they are bad.
