In addition to burning witches, people in Medieval Europe also burned Jews whenever there was a plague (if the Jews were lucky then they were ONLY exiled). The reason is that laws in that time prevented people from loaning money to others of the same religion (Christians couldn't loan to Christians, Jews couldn't loan to Jews), so it was common for Christians to borrow lots of money from Jewish Moneylenders and then banish and/or murder them so as to avoid repaying debts.
