In Asia, having pale skin indicates that you do not have to work out in the fields all day, which means you're rich, and therefore desirable.
In (northern) Europe, having tanned skin means that you can afford expensive mediterranean holidays, which means you're rich, and therefore desirable.
As mentioned earlier, a hundred years ago, it was pale skin that was desirable in Europe, and for the same reasons as Asia. It's all about showing off your wealth.
Strangely, despite tanned skin being desirable in northern europe, certain areas apparently have a different opinion about brown skin, or at least the people it contains. However, nobody accused said people of being logical, or indeed intelligent. But that is a comic for another day...
