In medieval Europe there were certain occasions when men dressed as women and vice versa, when up was down and high was low. The Roman Saturnalia featered a feast during which the slaves sat to dinner and were waited on by their masters. France later had a "Feast of Fools when a Boy Bishop would be elected. Carnival and Halloween were also products if that tradition. It was okay to cross dress during the festival... but not the rest of the year.
