A two-party system is what a voting system like ours will always generate given enough time. Less popular parties will roll their support into larger parties that are somewhat close ideologically, until 2 ideologically-opposed parties remain. Smaller parties spring up from time to time, however they pull voters from the party that they are closest to, so they die out quickly if they even gained life in the first place.
