If you were to listen to many Americans, that is exactly what they believe. They (sorry - we, as a group) don't even know or understand our own history, that socialistic thinking has very deep roots in American culture, e.g. the alliance of the rural 'prairie populists' and the urban socialists that ran many parts of the mid-west for a long time.
Socialism, according to the right, is something completely unamerican, brought over to our pure country, contaminating it with outside thinking, by <explitive> Europeans (mainly southern and/or eastern) and dirty <explitive> Jews. Nineteenth-century thinking in the 21st-century world - still promoted by some very powerful people. IT may get us all killed yet....
