@Rogers I would have expected to get such advise from the Swede mentioned here. Usually he's not the kind of guy who's into this kind of 'prank', so I guess he just forgot... But it's written here now, so hopefully others can be prevented from making such a capital mistake.
Not that it's a better idea to have it outside, by the way. We left it overnight in the garden and the spot where we had it also smelled for a while and somehow it still seems slightly haunted now...
Actually, my best advise for serving surströmming is: don't even consider it.
