I'm 31, when i was little everyone used to make turnip lanterns because pumpkins weren't common here. It was a mission to make a good lantern since turnip is just solid and really hard to carve, like break the knife hard, couldn't have got away with the piddly little pumpkin carving sets you can buy these days. A pumpkin is so much easier to deal with. You ended up with a scarier lantern because it was such an effort to carve, it always ended up looking misshapen and horrific!
