To be clear: the Donner-Reed party was crossing the Sierra Nevada in 1846-47, well before the California Gold Rush which started January 1848. They were stranded high in the mountains due to an early snow, dug in, and lasted about 4 months before anyone who could help came along. They started with 87... and ended with 48.
