It was then banned by Denmark in the 1920s, but our supply packages (at least according to OP) had alcohol and tobacco along with everything else. A few years of supplies during the war outweighs the preceding centuries of available alcohol? I don't see how the OP could attribute "much of that abuse" to the US.
