@ApplesRock "except without rights" kinda means they weren't equal at all. That's like saying "you drink whatever you want, except liquids".

Moreover, while slaves were expensive the Antebellum South was extremely paranoid about a slave rebellion and so often treated their slaves with cruelty just to make them too afraid to rebel. After the defeat of Natt Turner's rebellion, 3000 slaves were murdered by freemen and slave owners in reprisal killings.
