In Australia, if it’s a house the washing machine always has its own room though that room may have other uses too e.g. storage, ironing. If it’s a flat the laundry can be anywhere: I’ve had or seen: a shared shed out the back, a shared room on the ground floor, a shared room on each floor, its own tiny room inside the flat, the bathroom and in my current flat the kitchen (albeit hidden behind folding doors).
