@denfriefugl There's a lot of people in the US who don't like to joke about that, still. In fact my grandfather went to his grave barely speaking about the time he'd spent in the navy back then, except to talk about how horrible the experience was. And he wasn't even injured, didn't even see combat - his ship was one that had to drag the bodies out of the water for recovery.
I explain people being able to joke about it by saying either they were the lucky ones that didn't see the worst of it - or they had no choice if they wanted to be able to interact with those people and not get dismissed by them like this.
I mean, those aren't the only options, but I'd wager a few people around here didn't consider these...
