My bed comes to just above my knee when I stand beside it, and if I sit on it, both my feet touch the floor. Seems like a good, sensible height to me, if just for that reason.
Mind you, I know a number of folks whose "bed" is just a mattress on the floor... but they're rather poor; it's not like that's their deliberate choice. Beds and mattresses are expensive (to buy new).
