@CorruptUser Your theory might also be reversed: in the north you would benefit from less surface area per volume to preserve heat in the winter. Although there are plenty of small animals also in the north.

One thing to note: it's extremely difficult to lose heat if the ambient temperature is higher than the body temperature, regarless of if you are big or small. Though a bigger body takes much longer to overheat than a small one. Just by the virtue of living, you produce heat internally all the time as well.
