@VictorMortimer I think you're missing the point. I agree the world is a bit overpopulated (1-2 billion is probably the ideal number), but with an ageing population, that's going to have an enormous strain on a country. If population decline happens, either virtually every working person has to support the elderly, or the elderly will have to work when their bodies aren't up to the job, or we have to let the elderly die. None of those are good options.

Immigration isn't the answer. Immigration in small/medium amounts is great, it makes countries much better, more diverse, more tolerant. Immigration in extremely large numbers is terrible, they'll just replace the existing culture with their own. If there are enough immigrants of one group, then they'll congregate together, not integrate into the rest of the country. Then instead of south korea being filled with koreans, it'll be filled with chinese (or indian, or whatever other group decides to emigrate there en-mass). Not only that, but it's also a band aid. The countries that people emigrate from are improving, babies per person is declining, and soon(ish) the flow of immigrants will dwindle.

Ideally, babies per woman would hover around 1.8. Under the 2.1 that is required for a stable population, but still high enough that society doesn't collapse due to an ageing population. We want slow population decline, not a total collapse.
