@VictorMortimer I think you're missing the point. I agree the world is a bit overpopulated (1-2 billion is probably the ideal number), but with an ageing population, that's going to have an enormous strain on a country. If population decline happens, either virtually every working person has to support the elderly, or the elderly will have to work when their bodies aren't up to the job, or we have to let the elderly die. None of those are good options.
Immigration isn't the answer. Immigration in small/medium amounts is great, it makes countries much better, more diverse, more tolerant. Immigration in extremely large numbers is terrible, they'll just replace the existing culture with their own. If there are enough immigrants of one group, then they'll congregate together, not integrate into the rest of the country. Then instead of south korea being filled with koreans, it'll be filled with chinese (or indian, or whatever other group decides to emigrate there en-mass). Not only that, but it's also a band aid. The countries that people emigrate from are improving, babies per person is declining, and soon(ish) the flow of immigrants will dwindle.
Ideally, babies per woman would hover around 1.8. Under the 2.1 that is required for a stable population, but still high enough that society doesn't collapse due to an ageing population. We want slow population decline, not a total collapse.
@Programmdude
Mass Immigration is completely fine if governments aren't stupid about it (spoiler: They usually are.)
Look, it costs about $13k USD to raise one grade 1 child to 18 year old functioning adult. That's before you calculate in costs for subsidies to ensure toddlers are made and taken care of, any post-public-education assistance and the personal donations of a 1 or 2 citizens to get them to that point (about $310,000 per child).
With a single immigrant, you're getting a WHOLE ready-to-go worker, cost $323k, FOR FREE! Another country is literally losing a $323k investment to YOUR country FOR FREE!
Let's put this in a different view. If you were middle class, and you are renting an apartment from a slumlord for $2k/mo, and you REALLY need an upgrade, and suddenly you inherit a $323k mansion for free, a very useful item. The only catch is the mansion is kind of run down and leaky, but is literally a mansion built out of brick and stone; it's got a solid foundation (most people willing to world travel do). Are you going to just sit in it as it leaks and continually complain as it leaks, put your bed right underneath the leak and let it continually drip on your head, or are you going to put in that $2k/mo you know you had into fixing it up; maybe turn half into a bed & breakfast that pays you and the other half to live in.
Nearly every country has an immigration policy where they are basically sliding their bed under the worst leak and just let it drive them nuts.
Let me draw attention to this...
*************************************
Most countries completely lack immigrant on-boarding.
*************************************
They spend all their immigration money (what little they DO spend) on *making sure* the immigrants are "the right kind of people" instead of spending that money (and definitely not spending an appropriate amount) on *making* them "the right kind of people".)
Countries that have a short "intro to our country" that tell about cultural differences, different expectations in laws, etc. (a big example being countries with significant islamic immigration often face huge rape problems because in islamic countries, bare skin is literally seen as an invitation to have sex. So rape skyrockets during mass immigration from those countries, but those immigrants getting a $150 per immigrant lessons that teaches them things like "People are allowed to dress how they like here. Bare skin is not an invitation to have sex. If they want sex, they'll tell you directly. All bare skin means is that it's bare skin and that's probably clothing they're more comfortable in. We don't need 24/7 sun protection here. Desert-style clothes get muggy and uncomfortable here for a lot of people." And suddenly, the immigrant rape rate drops nearly 90%, to a rate much closer to everyone else.)
Fact of the matter is, if $9k were spent per immigrant on some cultural integration classes and a language course with comprehension testing at the end, the country would STILL be getting a huge financial boost from the immigration AND lose the majority of problems caused by it.
You gain a free labor & income & tax producing resident or citizen at a steep 95% discount after addressing the fact they're a little bit of a fixer-upper.
Or, you know, they could keep sitting under the leak, cursing that they were ever given a free mansion and wishing they could go back to their slumlord.
Man, everything really is better in Norway!
